South Australia Opals The Opal is Australia’s national gemstone... with most of them dug from the red soils in the Outback of South Australia. The three largest main opal fields of Coober Pedy, Andamooka and
Mintabie, account for a staggering 80% of the world’s production.
Coober Pedy, also known as the Opal capital of the world, is the largest opal-producing centre in Australia. The Olympic Australis from Coober
Pedy is believed to be the world’s largest piece of uncut precious opal and weighs 3.5 kilograms! It was found in 1956, the year the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne.
There are tours available in Adelaide to Coober Pedy, giving you an excellent chance to shop around for a bargain.
Today, Coober Pedy is still known as a frontier mining town, with many of its 3500 residents
living underground to escape the soaring 45C (113F ouch thats hot) temperatures in summer (June - August).
Visitors can also stay underground in some very trendy, cool hotels.
In
Adelaide, amongst the best shops to buy opals are the Adelaide Gem Centre in Hindley St and The Opal Mine in Gawler Place, but there are others, so don’t be afraid to shop around.

Aesop’s newest store in Armadale, Australia, had been designed by Paphitis in cooperation with Melbourne architect Ryan Russell.
The store is located in a very small space but it offered enormous
potential according to the architects. ‘We made use of light, colour and texture instead of focusing on size. The design allows Aesop products to be displayed both inside and outside the store, connecting us to the
street.’
Just like the Aesop shop that is located in Sydney, the largest walls of the shop are used to display the Aesop’s products.
